Solving Infinite Kolam in Knot Theory

چکیده

In southern India, there are traditional patterns of line-drawings encircling dots, called “Kolam”, among which one-line drawings or the “infinite Kolam” provide very interesting questions in mathematics. For example, we address the following simple question: how many patterns of infinite Kolam can we draw for a given grid pattern of dots? The simplest way is to draw possible patterns of Kolam while judging if it is infinite Kolam. Such a search problem seems to be NP complete: almost all cases should be examined for a solution. However, it is certainly not. In this paper, we focus on diamond-shaped grid patterns of dots, (1-3-5-3-1) and (1-3-5-7-5-3-1) in particular. By using the knot-theory description of the infinite Kolam, we show how to find the solution, which inevitably gives a sketch of the proof for the statement “infinite Kolam is not NP complete.” Its further discussion will be given in the final section.

A complete metric ttipology is introduced on the set of :il finite and infinite arrays and the topological properties of the space are studied. In this complete metric topolor,y, infinite arrays are the limits of increasing sequences of finite arrays. The n.>tion of successful infinite derivations in Generalized Context-free Kolam Array Grammars, yielding infinif e arrays, is introduced. This c...

Application of measures of noncompactness to infinite system of linear equations in sequence spaces

G. Darbo [Rend. Sem. Math. Univ. Padova, 24 (1955) 84--92] used the measure of noncompactness to investigate operators whose properties can be characterized as being intermediate between those of contraction and compact operators. In this paper, we apply the Darbo's fixed point theorem for solving infinite system of linear equations in some sequence spaces.

Digitalization and Analysis of Traditional Cycle Patterns in the World, and Their Contemporary Applications

Many traditional designs consist of some geometrical properties of symmetry, periodicity/repetition, recursion or cycle with an endless stroke, especially in Tamil Kolam, Celtic knots, African Sona, Vanuatu Nitus, Arabesque or Asian knot etc. People like to feel infinity, recurrency and dynamism especially of trace animation in these cycle patterns, and are attracted by such a fact that the pat...

Automata on Gauss Words

In this paper we investigate the computational complexity of knot theoretic problems and show upper and lower bounds for planarity problem of signed and unsigned knot diagrams represented by Gauss words. Due to the fact the number of crossing in knots is unbounded, the Gauss words of knot diagrams are strings over infinite (unbounded) alphabet. For establishing the lower and upper bounds on rec...

On Descriptional Complexity of the Planarity Problem for Gauss Words

In this paper we investigate the descriptional complexity of knot theoretic problems and show upper bounds for planarity problem of signed and unsigned knot diagrams represented by Gauss words. Since a topological equivalence of knots can involve knot diagrams with arbitrarily many crossings then Gauss words will be considered as strings over an infinite (unbounded) alphabet. For establishing t...
